The Hootsuite tax: why agencies are switching to flat-rate scheduling in 2026

Postora is run by the team behind Schedchie, one of the tools compared here.

A 3-person agency on Hootsuite Standard pays $3,564 a year for 10 accounts (3 × $99 × 12, hootsuite.com/plans, checked 2026-09-27). Schedchie's flat Team plan costs €299.88 (€24.99 × 12) at any account count.

"Hootsuite tax" is shorthand for what per-seat and per-account pricing does to an agency's bill. Every new team member is another seat. Every client past the account cap is a plan upgrade. The bill grows with headcount and client count, whether or not the work per client does.

The arithmetic is short. Hootsuite's plans page lists Standard at $99 per user per month, billed annually, for up to 10 social accounts (checked 2026-09-27). One person pays $99 a month. A 3-person agency on the same plan pays 3 × $99 = $297 a month, which is 3 × $99 × 12 = $3,564 a year. Nothing about the accounts changed; the team did.

Why traditional pricing hurts agencies

Agencies add people and clients in steps, and per-seat pricing turns each step into a line on the invoice. Hootsuite's own FAQ says its plans are sold per user, and you buy an additional seat for each team member who needs access. Its three self-serve plans, per user per month on annual billing (hootsuite.com/plans, checked 2026-09-27):

Plan Per user, per month, billed annually Social accounts What it adds
Standard $99 up to 10 unlimited scheduled posts, AI post and image generation, an inbox, brand and competitor monitoring
Professional $199 unlimited automated inbox replies and workflows, custom performance reports
Advanced $399 unlimited team content approvals, message assignment, team performance measures

The pain points, in numbers:

  • Per-user fees. Each person on Standard adds $99 × 12 = $1,188 a year (hootsuite.com/plans, checked 2026-09-27). Hiring a fourth person takes a Standard team from 3 × $99 × 12 = $3,564 to 4 × $99 × 12 = $4,752 a year.
  • Per-account caps. Standard stops at 10 accounts. The 11th account moves the whole team to Professional: 3 × $199 × 12 = $7,164 a year for three people (checked 2026-09-27).
  • Feature gating. Team approvals are listed on Advanced only. A 3-person agency that needs a second pair of eyes before a client post goes out pays 3 × $399 × 12 = $14,364 a year (checked 2026-09-27).
  • Billing basis. The page says annual billing gives a lower per-user rate than month-to-month. The monthly figure is not printed in the page text, so we do not quote it; ask for it before you commit to a plan.

None of this makes Hootsuite a bad product. It prices for organisations where each seat is a full-time social role and the inbox, monitoring and reports are used every day. The tax falls on agencies whose people spend most of their time scheduling for many small clients.

What flat-rate scheduling changes

A flat-rate scheduler charges one fixed price that does not grow with the number of connected accounts. Some also include a fixed number of users. For an agency, the appeal is that adding a client does not change the bill.

Schedchie is built on that model. Pro is €7.99 a month with unlimited connected accounts, unlimited scheduled posts and unlimited client groups, each client in its own workspace with its own calendar. It covers one person. The Team plan is €24.99 a month and adds 3 invited members, per-member post approvals (a held post does not publish until approved), client review links (the client approves or requests changes without an account) and a 30-day activity view. Enterprise is €200 a month for 10 invited members. Billing is monthly only. X (Twitter) posting is a separate add-on, €4.99 for 30 posts valid for 30 days, and is not in any plan price.

So Schedchie is flat on accounts and tiered on people. A 3-person agency pays the Team price whether it runs 10 accounts or 300. What it does not get: an inbox, listening, AI writing tools, best-time suggestions, a mobile app or a public API, and analytics that are basic next to Hootsuite's reports.

Other tools cut the tax in different places:

  • SocialPilot sells account bundles with users included. Ultimate holds 50 accounts with unlimited users for $170 a month billed annually, and extra accounts are $4 a month each (socialpilot.co/plans, checked 2026-09-27). Flat on people, stepped on accounts.
  • Buffer charges per channel but not per person on Team: $10 per channel per month billed yearly, with unlimited team members. Its free plan covers 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts each, and Essentials is $5 per channel per month billed yearly for 1 user (buffer.com/pricing, checked 2026-09-27). Flat on people, linear on accounts, with a discount above 10 channels that the page's calculator shows but does not print.
  • Zoho Social prices business plans by brand and agency plans by client, with a set number of team members per plan; its pricing page leads with no per-user penalty for growing. Paid prices load in the browser, so we give no figure; see zoho.com/social/pricing.
  • SocialBee sells profile tiers: Bootstrap (5 profiles, 1 user) is $29 a month billed monthly, Accelerate (10 profiles, 1 user) $49, and Pro (25 profiles, 3 users per workspace, 5 workspaces) $99, or $290, $490 and $990 a year billed annually (socialbee.com/pricing, checked 2026-09-27). Only Pro includes more than one user; extra users are an in-app add-on.

Comparing pricing models

The same agency on each model: three people, first with 10 social accounts, then with 30. Cheapest plan that holds both, cheapest billing basis the vendor prints, per year. Prices stay in the vendor's currency and are never converted.

Tool Pricing model 3 people, 10 accounts 3 people, 30 accounts
Hootsuite per user; 10 accounts on Standard Standard: 3 × $99 × 12 = $3,564 Professional: 3 × $199 × 12 = $7,164
Sprout Social per seat; 5 profiles below Professional Professional: 3 × $299 × 12 = $10,764 Professional: 3 × $299 × 12 = $10,764
Agorapulse per user; 10 profiles per plan, then $10 per profile per month on annual billing Standard: 3 × $79 × 12 = $2,844 Standard plus 20 extra profiles; total not computed
Buffer per channel; unlimited users on Team Team: 10 × $120 = $1,200 Team: at most 30 × $120 = $3,600, less the unprinted discount above 10 channels
SocialPilot account bundles with users included Standard (15 accounts, 3 users): $42.50 × 12 = $510 Premium (25 accounts, 6 users) plus 5 extra: ($85 + 5 × $4) × 12 = $1,260
SocialBee profile tiers; more than 1 user included from Pro Pro (25 profiles, 3 users included): $990 billed annually above Pro's 25 profiles; larger tiers not quoted
Zoho Social brand or client bundles not verified not verified
Schedchie flat on accounts; 3 invited members on Team Team: €24.99 × 12 = €299.88 Team: €24.99 × 12 = €299.88

Agorapulse's Standard plan is $79 per user per month billed annually, or $99 paid monthly (agorapulse.com/pricing, checked 2026-09-27). Sendible, another agency-focused tool, loads its plan prices in the browser; see sendible.com/pricing.

Read the table by column. Going from 10 to 30 accounts more than doubles Hootsuite's bill, because the 11th account forces Professional. Buffer's bill grows with each channel. SocialPilot steps up at its bundle edges. Sprout is already on Professional at 10 profiles, so it stays put. Schedchie's does not move, and only its people limit changes the price: a fifth person means Enterprise at €200 a month.

Key factors for agencies

  • What one more person costs. On Hootsuite Standard, $99 × 12 = $1,188 a year per person (hootsuite.com/plans, checked 2026-09-27). On Buffer Team and SocialPilot Ultimate, nothing. On Schedchie, nothing up to 3 invited members on Team, then Enterprise.
  • What one more client costs. Count the accounts a new client brings and check where the next cap sits: 10 on Hootsuite Standard, 10 per plan on Agorapulse, 15, 25 or 50 on SocialPilot, one channel at a time on Buffer, none on Schedchie.
  • Post limits. Read the footnotes. Buffer's unlimited posts carry a fair-use cap of 5,000 per channel, and Hootsuite's unlimited posts carry an asterisk on its page.
  • Approvals. If clients or a lead must sign off before posts go live, check which plan has it: Advanced on Hootsuite, Team on Buffer, manager approval from Standard and client approval from Premium on SocialPilot, and the Team plan on Schedchie, which adds client review links that need no client account.
  • Client separation. Schedchie gives each client its own workspace and calendar, with no limit on the number of groups. Zoho Social's agency plans are counted by client.
  • What you would give up. Flat-rate tools do less. If your agency sells community management, listening or monthly reports, the inbox and analytics in Hootsuite, Sprout or Agorapulse may be worth their seat price. Schedchie has no social listening and no AI tools, and its analytics are lighter than theirs.
  • The trial. Hootsuite, Buffer, SocialPilot and Schedchie run 14-day trials; Sprout and Agorapulse run 30 days. Run it with real client accounts and a real week of posts.

Conclusion: embracing predictable pricing

The Hootsuite tax is the pricing model itself: a seat per person, a cap on accounts, and approvals on the top self-serve plan. For a 3-person agency it means 3 × $99 × 12 = $3,564 a year at 10 accounts and 3 × $199 × 12 = $7,164 at 30 (hootsuite.com/plans, checked 2026-09-27).

Flat-rate and bundle pricing move the cost somewhere else. SocialPilot and Buffer stop charging per person. Schedchie stops charging per account: €24.99 a month for a team of up to four, at any account count, and €7.99 for one person. That is the lowest price for unlimited accounts and posts among the tools on this page, in exchange for fewer features.

The takeaway: before comparing features, write down how many people and how many client accounts you will have in a year, and price every candidate at that size. The cheapest tool today can be the most expensive one after the next two hires.
